Marc Jacobs’ NYFW Appropriation

Published in September 2016, YouTube Beauty Blogger Jackie Aina called out Marc Jacobs for the culture appropriation that was featured in his NYFW show that year and for the comments he made after he received backlash for the show.

Long story short, the models in the show wore multicolored dreads in their hair and Marc asked why women of color wearing their hair straight isn’t cultural appropriation.

While Jackie touched on the topic above in her video which you can watch here. I want to touch on the fact that that show in particular could’ve featured women and color wearing their hair in the purple dreads and it would’ve been a great opportunity for women of color in the fashion world. Instead of backlash for the appropriation, there might’ve been praise for the appreciation.

Instead women of color felt their hairstyle, that is a part of their culture, is loved more than them…except when it’s on them to begin with.
